9jafuturhythmachine: (re)sampler
2024
Musical instrument, sound design, performance, sculpture
On 20 October, 2020, the Nigerian military opened fire into
a crowd of peaceful protesters, killing at least 12 people
and injuring many more.
This shooting at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos was a
suppression of nationwide #EndSARS protests calling for
the disbandment of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS).
I designed the
9jafuturhythmachine, to
memoralise the
#EndSARS protesters and
to bring awareness to the
Nigerian authorities’
targeted attack on young
people.
The 9jafuturhythmachine: (re)sampler is an instrument of
defiance and its functionality is characterised by
body modification, DIY technology powered by a
laptop, and dreadlocks; the features SARS officers
used to profile young Nigerians.
I designed it with a visual language that I hope will
be familiar to Nigerians in London, and throughout
the diaspora. I’ve made this instrument to
encourage community and discussion through
performance.
